Mateus is a Research Scientist at the DOE Joint Genome Institute, where he specializes in mining metagenomic data to uncover the hidden diversity of Mobile Genetic Elements (MGEs). His recent work involved characterizing soil plasmids and developing the Global Soil Plasmidome Resource, as well as transitioning the IMG/VR v4 database into MetaVR, a critical resource for the virus research community. Currently, Mateus leverages this large-scale data to characterize bacteriophages and their pathogenic hosts, identifying novel candidates for phage therapy and enzybiotics to combat antibiotic resistance.
